Chinese Companies Sign Deal for Six 13,600 TEU Large Container Ships

Updated: October 23, 2024

Hudong-Zhonghua Shipbuilding (Group) Co., Ltd. and China Shipbuilding Trading Co., Ltd., subsidiaries of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), have signed a contract with the world’s largest independent containership leasing company for the construction of six 13,600 TEU large container ships.

The deal with Canadian company Seaspan, which was signed in Shanghai on October 18, represents Hudong-Zhonghua’s third batch of large container ship orders this year, which comes to a total of 15 vessels.

The vessels, to be developed and designed by Hudong-Zhonghua, will be based on an environmentally-friendly container ship model. The vessels will have a length of approximately 336 meters, a width of 51 meters, a depth of 30.2 meters and a maximum capacity of 14,132 TEUs, including 2,000 refrigerated container slots.

The vessels will offer low energy consumption, high speed and green performance, complying with international environmental regulations, providing an efficient and economical maritime transport solution for customers. The ships are scheduled for delivery between 2026 and 2028.

As the order will be settled in RMB, one of the few major shipbuilding deals where a foreign owner has opted to use this payment method, this will help Hudong-Zhonghua mitigate exchange rate risks, improve profitability, and enhance market competitiveness, while also benefiting ship owners by reducing financing costs and improving trade efficiency.
