PowerChina Assists Local Water Supply Project Along the China-Laos Railway

Updated: September 30, 2024

The China-Laos Railway, a flagship project of the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), jointly constructed and operated by China and Laos and adopted Chinese standards, was the first international railway to directly connect to China’s rail network.

Since its inauguration three years ago, it has become a vital “golden corridor” between the two countries.

Power Construction Corporation of China (PowerChina) played a significant role in the construction of what is the first modern railway in Laos and a symbol of China-Laos friendship under the BRI framework, with the project allowing the corporation to fulfil its foreign corporate social responsibility. During the construction process, PowerChina’s Sinohydro Bureau 14 Co., Ltd assisted with a local water supply project, strengthening bonds with the people of Laos.

Today, the water supply project benefits 245 households, providing safe drinking water for 1,225 people, including students and teachers at a local school. The project has brought tangible improvements to the living standards of local villagers, contributing to the BRI goal of shared prosperity and demonstrating China’s commitment to fostering mutual growth and opportunity.

During discussions on the significance of the China-Laos Railway for Laotian socio-economic development, and the impact of the water supply project on villagers in Vang Vieng county, Vientiane province, the head of Vang Vieng expressed his deep gratitude.

He stated that Laos’ economy, particularly its tourism industry, has seen significant growth since the railway line began operating and that even greater development is anticipated.

He said that the importance of the water supply project should not be underestimated, especially considering the health and safety benefits accruing to residents.

“We are deeply grateful to PowerChina for constructing this water facility, solving the drinking water problems for our villagers,” Zhao Jianxin said, a local village leader.

“Clean water is especially vital for the elderly and children, and this project has also ensured safe water for the local school,” Zhao said.

“It is PowerChina that has allowed us to drink clean and safe water. We will always remember their contribution and hope that the friendship between the Chinese and Laotian people will endure forever.”

The county government has sent a letter of thanks and an honorary certificate to PowerChina, and recorded the water supply project in the county’s historical archives. It will stand as a testament to the enduring friendship between China and Laos.
