COFCO International, a subsidiary of COFCO Corporation (COFCO), recently completed the loading of its first shipment of Argentine deforestation-free soy products at Timbúes port terminal on the Parana River, destined for the EU market.
The European Union introduced the EU Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (EUDR) in June 2023, which mandates that major agricultural products sold on the EU market must be free from recent deforestation. This regulation aims to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and biodiversity loss, and will take effect on December 30, 2024.
The ship carries 18,000 tons of certified Argentine deforestation-free soy meal, which will be delivered to an Irish feed company. This batch of soy meal is fully traceable and segregated to avoid mixing with non-certified products. The shipment is certified by the Argentine Visec agricultural product traceability system, which was developed by the Argentine government and agricultural enterprises. It allows for comprehensive monitoring and tracking of the local soy supply chain to ensure that the products are not associated with deforestation.
COFCO International is a specialized company under COFCO, focusing on overseas major agricultural products, with branches in 36 countries and regions worldwide. In Latin America, COFCO International aims to establish a deforestation-free soy supply chain by 2025.
