World's First Coal-Based Polyglycolic Acid Degradable Material Production Demonstration Project Launched in Northwest China

Updated: September 30, 2022

A polyglycolic acid degradable material demonstration project with an annual output of 50,000 metric tons was launched by a subsidiary of China Energy Investment Corporation in Northwest China's Shaanxi Province on Sept 19.

It is expected to be the world's first coal-to-polyglycolic acid degradable material demonstration project and is of great significance to high-end, diversified and low-carbon development of China's coal chemical industry.

The polyglycolic acid degradable material has advantages like complete biodegradability, high biocompatibility and outstanding mechanical and barrier capacities, making it capable of harmlessly being degraded in various kinds of environments such as soil and seawater.

Against the background of the global call for environmental protection, polyglycolic acid degradable material is an ideal substitute for disposable plastic products like plastic bags, meal boxes and straws. What's more, it can be used to make bridge plugs and frac balls during oil and gas development, and even products for the medical field.

Compared with traditional polyolefin plastic products, the coal-based polyglycolic acid degradable material consumes 50 percent less coal in production and has about 65 percent less carbon dioxide emissions, while having double to triple industrial added value.
