Experts Discuss Chinese Technology in Deepsea, Deep-Earth and Deep Space Exploration

Updated: October 08, 2021

Researchers at central state-owned enterprises discussed issues related to advanced Chinese technology in deepsea, deep-earth and deep space exploration, as well as industrial restructuring, at a parallel forum of the 4th China Enterprise Forum, which was held on Sept 23 and 24 in Jinan, Shandong Province.

Experts at the forum said technology and innovation is playing an increasingly crucial role in international competition as China enters a new development stage.

As a major part of the national technology and innovation strategy, exploration of the deepsea, deep-earth and deep space has made progress and achievements that include manned space, lunar exploration, deepsea equipment, high-speed trains, ultra high-voltage power transformation and transmission and large-scale aircraft manufacturing projects.

At the parallel forum, Yang Hui, chief designer of the Beidou navigation satellites, outlined the development of the Beidou satellites and the current utilization and future plans of the series.

She said the Beidou navigation satellite system has become a part of China's core infrastructure and is contributing to traffic and transport, agriculture, forestry and fishery production, hydrological monitoring, weather broadcast, communication, and power and public security.

Its navigation function has also been widely used in many areas, reshaping the way people work and live.

Ye Cong, chief designer of the domestically-developed deepsea manned submersible Fendouzhe (Striver), reviewed the development of manned deep diving in China in the past 20 years and discussed the technology and applications behind several Chinese manned submersibles, including the Jiaolong (Sea Dragon) and Shenhai Yongshi (Deep Sea Warrior).

Ye's speech focused on the development of the Fendouzhe, which set a national record by diving to a depth of 10,909 meters in the Mariana Trench in November 2020.

Ye said the submersible was a core part of China's key deepsea technology and equipment development plan during the 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-20) period. More than 96.5 percent of its core components were domestically developed.

Fendouzhe reflects the latest progress in the country's manned deep diving technology, Ye added.

The development of deep-earth equipment and related energy exploration is also of great need in China.

Guo Xusheng, an academic at the Chinese Academy of Engineering and deputy chief geologist of the China Petroleum & Chemical Corporatio, said the deep earth industry in China is seeing robust progress and called for greater development of deep earth oil, gas and thermal energy, as well as more support for technology and new materials.

He said the next step is to develop independent deep-earth detection technology and systems.
