CNBM Pushes with All Its Might in China’s Special Material Development - CNBM

Updated: June 28, 2021

Weighing more than 169 kilograms and with a thickness of 7.5 centimeters, China's first bulletproof glass for cars was born at a workshop of China National Building Material Group Co., Ltd.(CNBM) in 1968.

Its development can be dated back to 1966 when China still used a bulletproof sedan made by the Soviet Union to pick up foreign guests.

To manufacture China's own security sedan, CNBM soon started research and development of bulletproof glass, a key part of such vehicles.

After a long period of unremitting work, a batch of glittering and transparent bulletproof glass was born from a high temperature reactor after more than 10 hours of firing and processing.

The glass passed bulletproof property testing by being shot at the same spot with three bullets.

The first bounced off and the second fully embedded in the glass. The last shot hit the second bullet and pushed its head out of the glass but failed to get it all the way through.

The testing marked the success of China's first independently-developed bulletproof glass.

CNBM never stopped working and remained focused on the float glass process, the most advanced glass production technology of the 1960s.

On Sept 23, 1971, the country's first high-quality float glass was produced, a symbol that China had mastered the technology.

So far, there are 289 float glass production lines in the country and most of them are still based on the float glass process technology.

In addition to China's first bulletproof glass and its first float glass, CNBM is also master of the world's best technology used to produce neutral borosilicate pharmaceutical glass. Besides China, such technology has only been mastered by the US, Germany and Japan.

Special materials made by CNBM are now often seen in many major national programs and national defense projects including the Shenzhou spaceships, large aircraft, and the Three Gorges project.

The company is making every endeavor to realize the rejuvenation of the Chinese nation.
