China Launches Special Alliance for Global Climate Governance

Updated: 2021-06-16

The China Oil and Gas Methane Alliance was launched in Beijing on May 18 to promote methane emission control across the industry and improve Chinese enterprises' involvement in global climate governance.

At the launch ceremony, seven member enterprises including China Petrochemical Corporation (Sinopec Group), promised that they will take actions and increase cooperation to strengthen the development and research of key methane control technologies, improve the recycling and closed processing of the released air, and push forward leak detection and repairs.

The alliance also aims to play a positive role in decision-making in the field and be a pioneer of environmental protection and improvement, in order to contribute to building a community with a shared future for mankind.

During China's 13th Five-Year Plan period (2016-20), Sinopec Group initiated several campaigns focusing on water and air protection and green production.

Based on these campaigns, the company recycled more than 200 million cubic meters of methane annually, equal to the elimination of 3 million tons of carbon dioxide.

The company announced on March 29 that it aims to cut down methane emission intensity by 50 percent by 2025.
