CHNG Holds Open Day Event at Lower Sesan 2 Hydropower Station in Cambodia

Updated: 2020-11-23

An open day event at the Lower Sesan 2 Hydropower Station in Cambodia was held by China Huaneng Group Co., Ltd. (CHNG) on Nov 23.

Themed "Energize where you are", the online event was intended to demonstrate the country's largest hydropower project including its operation and power supply amid the epidemic, and the company's contribution to biodiversity protection and fulfillment of social responsibilities.

It was also a platform for people to learn about CHNG's efforts to build energy cooperation between China and Cambodia and to carry out Belt and Road construction adhering to the principle of "extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits".

Located in the mountainous area in Northeast Cambodia, the Lower Sesan 2 Hydropower Station has been called "the Three Gorges project of Cambodia".

With a 6,500-meter dam, Asia's longest, the station has an installed capacity of 400,000 kilowatts, 14 percent of the country's total power supply.

The station is capable of producing about 2 billion kWh of power annually, which greatly relieves electricity shortages and lowers local power prices.

Its strong power supply capacity also plays a significant role in boosting economic and social development in Cambodia.

During the event, Yang Xiaoyu, engineer at the station, explained the power generation principle and its role in flood control and water resource adjustment.

It's worth mentioning that the company invested about $1.5 million to construct a bio-fishway on the right bank of the Sesan River to limit impact on the surrounding environment.

The event also highlighted a new village built by CHNG for villagers who used to live in remote regions with no sustainable conditions.

The company has built schools, clinics, temples and police stations in the village and has also developed a drainage system, power grid and wells.

What's more, the new village is close to the No. 78 highway, improving connectivity between the area and other regions.

During the event, Lin Weijie, chief economist of CHNG, said that the company will continue to deepen green energy cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative and contribute to energy development and transformation in Cambodia.

Lin added that the company will keep providing power solutions based on safe, clean, highly-efficient and smart energy to boost investment, construction, operation and technology, continue to serve and export a standard full industrial chain and realize win-win results for all cooperating parties.
