Two of China Southern Power Grid (CSG)'s targeted poverty-alleviation counties – Donglan of the Guangxi Zhuang autonomous region and Weixi of Yunnan province – were de-listed as impoverished counties in May.
CSG started to shoulder precise poverty-alleviation missions in the two counties in November 2012. The company has invested 1.58 billion yuan ($221.89 million) in industrial projects and 139 million yuan for poverty alleviation in the counties since 2013.
It has also helped train 139 grass-roots cadres and more than 2,000 technicians, and purchased local agricultural products valued at 49.93 million yuan.
An integrated poverty-alleviation mode of industry, consumption and education has been formed to help poverty-stricken households create economic benefits by themselves instead of only receiving funds.
All 147 administrative villages in Donglan now have their own cooperative industries and several unique agricultural product brands have been promoted in Weixi.
In addition to industrial projects and consumer-driven poverty alleviation, the company improved upgrading of local power grids and education facilities.
Since 2013, the company has invested 1.05 billion yuan in power grid construction in Donglan, which met the demands of local poverty-stricken people.
CSG also established Donglan and Weixi as industrial-power poverty-alleviation demonstration counties and smart power distribution network counties to help them prepare for rural revitalization.
In terms of education, CSG initiated a project to help the poverty-stricken areas build schools and reading rooms and cooperated with local schools to train students into technical talents and recruited them to work for the company after graduation.
Nearly 10 million yuan has been invested in middle school construction in Donglan and 6.3 million yuan in reading rooms by CSG since 2013 and thousands of people have obtained primary vocational qualification certificates thanks to training offered by the company, which improved villagers' capacity and their employment prospects.
Although the two counties had been removed from poverty, CSG will continue to consolidate poverty-alleviation achievements in 2020 and boost rural revitalization in both regions.
